Empowering Learning Through Action Research: A Grade School Showcase
JUL 08

In a continued commitment to academic excellence and innovation, the Grade School Department held a remarkable showcase of action research presentations during the in-service training in June and on July 8, 2025 during the Teachers Professional Development session. Each area shared insightful, data-driven practices designed to enrich instruction and elevate pupil outcomes. With a shared focus on engagement, performance, and holistic development, the presentations reflected the school’s deep-rooted culture of reflective teaching and learner-centered approaches.
Music: Nurturing Confidence Through Collaboration
The Music Teacher of Grade 4 explored how pupils’ confidence and motivation are influenced by performance settings. By comparing individual and group presentations, the research revealed that learners are more confident, motivated, and expressive in group performances. This affirmed the value of collaborative learning in fostering a positive musical experience and emotional growth among students.
Christian Living Education (CLE): Bible Stories Made Relatable
CLE teachers harnessed the power of real-life videos to assess and enhance the familiarity of Bible stories among Grades 1 and 2 pupils. The multimedia approach brought biblical narratives closer to the learners’ daily lives, making moral lessons more understandable and meaningful. This strategy significantly improved engagement, comprehension, and spiritual connection in young learners.
Filipino: Wikalaro – Learning the Language Through Play
The Filipino Department brought a fresh twist to language learning with Wikalaro, a set of gamified activities such as Bingo, Wika-Sulat, Snakes and Ladders, Tic-Tac-Toe, and Bokabularyo. These interactive games promoted greater pupil participation and improved language comprehension. The success of this initiative highlights how play-based learning strategies can make complex concepts more accessible and enjoyable.
Reading: Deepening Engagement with “Read and Explore”
In Reading, the “Read and Explore” program was implemented to foster deeper literary engagement. The research recorded notable improvements in fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking. Immersive reading experiences helped students make connections, ask questions, and delve more thoughtfully into texts—vital skills for lifelong literacy.
Art: Cultivating Critical Thinking Through Creativity
The Grade 6 Art Teachers focused on enhancing critical thinking skills by encouraging students to analyze, interpret, and express themselves through visual art. This approach allowed learners to engage with artistic concepts on a deeper level, promoting both cognitive development and creative confidence.
Araling Panlipunan (AP): Strengthening Academic Foundations
The AP Area implemented intervention strategies targeted at Grade 5 pupils. Results demonstrated significant improvements in both participation and content mastery. The research confirmed the effectiveness of structured support and differentiated instruction in addressing learning gaps and enhancing academic growth.
Mathematics: Comprehension Through the 4Rs
Math teachers employed the 4Rs Strategy—Read, Retell, React, Reflect—to boost problem-solving comprehension. This metacognitive approach encouraged students to break down Math problems, reflect on their thinking, and articulate their solutions. The strategy helped learners gain deeper conceptual understanding and confidence in tackling mathematical tasks.
Science: Fostering Inquiry and Research Skills
Science educators emphasized inquiry-based learning to bridge gaps in investigatory skills and scientific thinking. By guiding pupils through foundational research tasks, the department empowered learners to conduct meaningful experiments and formulate evidence-based conclusions—critical components in building scientific literacy.
Language: Overcoming Challenges in Language 4
The Language Area identified and addressed the most challenging topics in Language 4. Results showed that writing complex sentences is the most difficult for them. In the future, through focused instruction, scaffolded lessons, and customized support, pupils will be able to gain clarity on difficult grammar and writing concepts. This initiative will reinforce the importance of early intervention and strategic remediation.
Tools: Making Formative Assessments Fun and Effective
In Tools, gamified learning activities were introduced to elevate engagement and motivation during formative assessments in Grade 5. By incorporating play-based formats, teachers observed increased participation and better retention of content, showcasing how fun and function can go hand in hand in educational settings.
Physical Education (P.E.): Enhancing Performance and Discipline
The P.E. teachers investigated whether homogenous or heterogenous classes in terms of gender is better-suited in teaching Grade 6 pupils. The study showed that depending on the topic, some classes are better taught in heterogenous classes. As such, this is also the comment of the pupils.
H.E.L.E: Promoting Wellness Through Culinary Exploration
The H.E.L.E. Teachers promoted healthy snacking habits through hands-on cooking activities for Grade 4 pupils. This experiential learning approach fostered nutrition awareness while developing life skills such as planning, preparing, and practicing safety in the kitchen—making learning both practical and purposeful.
Conclusion: Research-Driven Teaching, Learner-Centered Growth
This year’s action research presentations are a testament to the Grade School Department’s unwavering dedication to educational innovation, reflective practice, and student-centered learning. By identifying real classroom challenges and implementing evidence-based strategies, each department has contributed to a unified vision: nurturing well-rounded, competent, and confident learners prepared to thrive in an ever-changing world. As the school continues to build a culture of inquiry and improvement, these research efforts illuminate a clear path forward—where teaching evolves through reflection, and learning flourishes through intentional, meaningful action.
