ABM Outreach 2025–2026: Ang Galing! Literacy Program at Manila North Cemetery

On March 14, 2026, the ABM Area conducted its annual ABM Outreach at Manila North Cemetery as part of its partnership with the Ang Galing! Literacy Program. The outreach was led by Ms. Marie Paulin S. Esconebra (ABM Coordinator) together with ABM faculty members Ms. Majah Angelah Y. Ty and Mr. Jolex L. Acid. They were joined by members of the BOSS Club and selected representatives from the Grade 11 and Grade 12 ABM students of Manresa School Senior High School, who served as the week’s volunteer tutors for the literacy program.

The program began with a short group prayer led by Niño Palma, followed by a brief orientation and a socialization activity between the volunteers and the students of the Ang Galing! program. As soon as the volunteers arrived at the venue, some of the children eagerly chose their student tutors, reflecting the welcoming presence and teaching appeal of the senior high volunteers from Manresa School.

The learning sessions were conducted based on the children’s reading and writing abilities, as well as their preferred learning styles in acquiring the basics of the Filipino language. Through guided reading, writing exercises, and interactive activities, the volunteers helped the children build confidence and develop essential literacy skills.

After the study sessions, the children lined up to receive meals and drinks, which were made possible through the generous contributions of Senior High School students from the proceeds of their selling activities during the second semester. The children also enjoyed a mini raffle prepared especially for them using donations from the BOSS Club’s Honesty Store.

“It was a meaningful and eye-opening experience because I had the opportunity to teach children who are struggling with reading, writing, and solving problems,” shared Marco Austria. “At first, I noticed that they were hesitant to be taught. However, as we spent time playing games to engage them, I was able to interact with them more comfortably. Seeing their efforts made me appreciate them even more. Even small achievements felt like something greater for both of us. Overall, I learned the importance of patience and dedication in helping others.”

Another volunteer, Denise Aizle Calalay, reflected on how the experience inspired her: “It made me want to work harder so that one day I can be part of an authority that has the ability to help children and people who do not have the privilege to read and write receive the education they deserve. This is truly an issue that our country needs to take action on because it can affect our nation’s future.”

Other student volunteers shared similar sentiments as they encountered children growing up in different living conditions yet equally deserving of the quality education that they themselves enjoy. The experience awakened in them a deeper appreciation of the spirit of Kapatid sa Kapwa—serving and uplifting others as brothers and sisters.

The ABM Area extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who made this outreach a success: the Senior High School students and faculty members of Manresa School, Mr. Emson M. Petilla (Assistant Senior High School Principal), Sr. Gemma K. Doguiles, F.I. (High School Principal), the F.I. Sisters, and the partner organization for this event, ATD Fourth World Philippines.
