Grade 10 Students Breathe New Life into Rizal’s El Filibusterismo
In a powerful celebration of literature and performance, Manresa School’s Grade 10 students staged Jose Rizal’s El Filibusterismo on March 6, 2026, at the Main Auditorium. Each section reimagined the novel’s enduring themes: justice, sacrifice, love, and resistance, bringing Rizal’s ideas into contemporary light.
The production opened with Service’s “Epistola,” centered on the mysterious Simoun and his pursuit of vengeance. Through unsent letters and unspoken truths, the play explored the weight of suppressed emotions and the impact of history. The segment highlighted how past events shape present emotions.
Next came Providence’s “El Fuego en Las Cenizas,” highlighting Placido Penitente, a student whose aspirations are stifled by an oppressive system. His story reflects the silent struggles of the youth. Like fire beneath ashes, his anger and courage wait for the right moment to ignite.
The stage then dimmed for Endurance’s “Sa Huling Panlangin," portraying Juli through the quiet innocence of her happiest moments before tragedy struck. What began as a glimpse of a young woman’s simple joys descended into a depiction of violence, as her voice was ultimately silenced.
Shifting the tone, Hopefulness presented “Pangarap,” a story centered on Paulita Gomez. Torn between love and security, Paulita faces a personal dilemma that mirrors the universal conflict between emotion and practicality. Her journey made the audience question what truly defines happiness.
Finally, Generosity closed the performance with “Agunyas,” led by Basilio. The haunting toll of the bell symbolized death, memory, and awakening. Each chime carried not only grief but also the fire of truth. In a world filled with fear and greed, Basilio’s story stood as a testament to the painful pursuit of justice.
More than a requirement, the Grade 10 production offered the audience an opportunity to engage with history in a meaningful way. Proceeds from ticket sales were allocated to support outreach initiatives, particularly for scholars, allowing the event to extend its impact beyond the stage and into the community.
